The Effect of a Natural Zeolite (Clinoptilolite) on the Performance of Broiler Chickens and the Quality of Their Litter


The study conducted by Karamanlis et al. aimed to evaluate the impact of clinoptilolite, a natural zeolite, on the growth performance of broiler chickens and the quality of their litter. A total of 5,200 one-day-old Cobb 500 broiler chickens were divided into four treatment groups over two rounds of 42 days each. The experimental design was a 2×2 factorial setup, with two diets (basal diet and zeolite diet) and two bedding types (sawdust and sawdust with zeolite). The results indicated that broilers fed the zeolite diet (Z) and those with zeolite bedding (ZS and ZSz) exhibited significantly higher growth rates compared to the control group (BS). The incorporation of clinoptilolite in both feed and bedding reduced the organic content in litter samples, with the lowest organic content observed in the ZSz group. Additionally, ammonia concentrations were significantly lower in groups with zeolite bedding compared to those without. The study concluded that the use of clinoptilolite positively influenced broiler growth and improved litter quality, suggesting its potential as a beneficial additive in poultry production.
