Effects of short-term supplementation of clinoptilolite in colostrum and milk on hematology, serum proteins, performance, and health in neonatal dairy calves

 

The study investigates the impact of clinoptilolite, a natural zeolite, on neonatal dairy calves' health, hematology, serum proteins, and overall performance. Conducted with thirty calves divided into three groups (control, test 1, and test 2), the research aimed to assess the effects of clinoptilolite supplementation in colostrum and milk. Test group 1 received 2% clinoptilolite in colostrum for 48 hours, while test group 2 received the same concentration in both colostrum and milk for 14 days. Blood samples were collected at various intervals to analyze hematological parameters, plasma proteins, and overall health.

Results indicated significant improvements in hematocrit (HCT), red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), monocyte count, and albumin levels in test group 2 compared to the control group. However, no significant differences were observed in overall performance metrics, such as weight gain, between the groups. The study also highlighted that while clinoptilolite supplementation positively influenced certain hematological parameters, it did not significantly affect white blood cell counts or serum globulin concentrations.

The authors concluded that short-term clinoptilolite supplementation could enhance specific hematological parameters and serum albumin levels in neonatal calves, suggesting further research is needed to explore its effects on immunoglobulin concentrations and overall health.
