U.S. Rivers Are Getting Saltier

According to Reuters, Washington, United States rivers and streams are becoming ‘saltier and more alkaline over the last 50 years.’ The problem is due in large part to the use of salts on roads for de-icing and snow melt, as well as heavy fertilizer use in this country which often leaches nitrates and salts into the water table.

Increased salt levels in water causes pipelines to corrode quickly which will then leach lead into the drinking water.  High levels salt helped create the Detroit lead crisis where many children were found with high levels lead.

Scientists say 66% of U.S. streams and rivers have become more alkaline over the past 50 years.

1) Preserve Over-Ripe Fruits & Vegetables

Placing zeolite powder or fine granules in a bowl on the counter, or in a bag in the refrigerator will slow down the ripening of fruits and vegetables. Place the most ripe area down into the zeolite, or wipe the entire fruit or vegetable with powder. Wash off before cooking or consumption. Zeolite is all-natural and non-toxic.

2) Place in the refrigerator to reduce humidity & odor

Place a bowl of zeolite granules or a chunk of raw zeolite in the refrigerator. The zeolite will act as both a dehumidifier and as an odor absorbent. For an average size refrigerator, just 1 to 2 zeolite chunks will eradicate lingering odors.

5) Add a little zeolite to cat litter to remove odor

Shake out a thin layer of zeolite powder over recent deposits or when cleaning out the litter box for an extra layer of odor control.

6) Pour over oil spills in the garage

Zeolite is an excellent oil absorbent, use it to cover and soak up oil spills around the garage or driveway. Sweep away and reuse as needed.

7) Use as a pet & lawn safe ice melt

Zeolite is a very powerful ice-melting material, with an even lower melting point than salt. It is naturally non-toxic, harmless to animals and beneficial to soils. Use granular zeolite over icy walkways, driveways, stairs and roads. 

8) Line Trash Cans to reduce humidity & odor

You can add a little zeolite powder or granules to the bottom of any trashcan, between the bag and the can. Not only will this act as an absorbent layer for any moisture leaks, it will also prevent mold and absorb odors including ammonia and harmful organic compounds.

Despite Common Belief Organic Matter Has Limited Effect On Water Holding Capacity

Turns out that despite previous hype about adding simply organic matter to soil, this alone has not proven to be a viable water retention soil additive.  Although organic matter is very important to soil health, nutrients and pH balance it cannot be said to improve water holding capacity.

Organic matter can have a marginal effect on sandy soils, but even less of an effect on clay based soils.  This means other additives are required to truly increase the water holding capacity of either type of soil.

Alternatively clinoptilolite zeolite has been proven to retain up to 60% of its weight in water, and can hold on to it for longer periods of time than perlite, vermiculite and volcanic rock.  Adding zeolite to soil at 10 – 15% by volume can increase water holding capacity, and does not deteriorate or break down over time.

ABR Ashburton zeolite study shows increased weed yields

Ashburton Ventures Inc. has released the analysis of the final weight of dried
marijuana harvested from plants involved in a study of cannabis cultivated
with zeolite from the Z-1 zeolite quarry near Cache Creek, B.C.
Plants enriched with a zeolite-carbon blend produced up to 29% more dry
cannabis (in a 0.9% to 29.4% range), with an average per-plant increase of
7.8% compared to control plants grown in straight coconut husk fibre (coco
coir). Plants enriched with straight zeolite produced up to 19% more dry
cannabis (in a 2.3% to 19.0% range), with an average increase of 7.1% in total
harvest yields compared to the control group average.
According to Albert Kasprowicz, BSc, "Each of the study's eighteen test groups
and two control groups produced a cluster of six data points within a range.
The average value of each data cluster is the key information, because an
operation's total harvest is proportional to the average plant's yield. We can
now predict with confidence the effect of ten distinct soil recipes on total
harvests, when applied on an operation-wide scale. Two of those recipes stand
out from the rest."
The study produced a scatter chart of data points measured in grams,
representing per-plant marijuana yields in twenty groups of six plants each.
The study was split between two strains, Meltdown and CBD God, grouped
according to levels of enrichment with straight zeolite, straight carbon, or a zeolite-carbon blend mixed into a base soil of coco coir. 

To obtain data, whole plants were hung to dry for one week in a controlled-humidity
environment before flowers were removed and weight measurements taken under Kasprowicz' supervision.
Kasprowicz stated, "Straight zeolite and zeolite-carbon blends gave us the
biggest gains, each with an average production increase of over 7% consistent
across both strains. Our next phase of research will attempt to push this
number higher by adjusting zeolite particle sizes. We believe a 10% production
increase may be a realistic goal. Our pending order for 20 tons of Z-1 Zeolite
has been adjusted to include a blend of fine particle sizes specific to our
needs."
Ashburton President David Gdanski stated, "Our study demonstrates a simpler
route to the higher yields cultivators are after. In an industry where costs
of production are high, typically exceeding 50% of the wholesale value of
marijuana produced, a 7% or 10% increase in yields and revenue can equate to a

in the commercial marijuana sector."
Ashburton currently awaits Kasprowicz' analysis of data recently released by
MB Labs, to better understand the mechanisms by which zeolite and carbon act
